The Global Earth Observation (GEO) was formally established in February 2005 to promote the establishment of an integrated Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) that will cooperate with the world to find solutions to global problems such as the rapid rise of global warming and natural disaster.
Korea joined the GEO as its founding member and has been a member of the GEO Executive Council thus far. From 2018, it has been co-chairing the GEO Asia-Oceania region.
The Secretariat of the K-GEO was transferred from the Korea Meteorological Administration to the Ministry of Science and Technology in January 1, 2017 and currently the Ministry of Science, Technology and Information’s Department of Large Public Research Policy is the Secretariat.
Specialist research institutes and academic groups in various subject areas such as biodiversity, ecosystem, environment, forest, land and urban planning, disaster, ocean, water resources, agriculture, weather/climate, energy and resources are participating in the Korea Global Earth Observation.
